S.A.C. Shutting of the Gates Parade

This year’s 318th Anniversary of the Shutting of the gates will be held on Saturday 2nd December, with the Walker Parent Club taking charge of the day’s proceedings. The day’s events follow a similar pattern to previous years with the cannon fired on the Walls at midnight to signal the start of the celebrations. As always the most important part of the celebrations is the service of thanksgiving in St Columb’s Cathedral led by the Dean, Rev. William Morton. The traditional burning of the Effigy of Lundy the Traitor will bring the day to a close.

In the morning the visiting brethren will parade from the waterside train station to the Memorial Hall at 11.30am. The main parade will commence at 1.30pm, starting at the Memorial Hall and making it’s way around the city centre to the Cathedral for the service of thanksgiving. Following the service, the Governor and President of the Walker Parent Club will lay a wreath on the newly refurbished “Heroes Mound” in the grounds of the Cathedral, in memory of the “Brave 13”. The parade will then follow the same route as before in reverse back to Bishop Street. At approximately 3.45pm, when all brethren and bands are gathered in Bishop Street, the Effigy of Lundy the Traitor will be burnt. Visiting Clubs will return to the Waterside at 4pm.

As always the Social Club will be open all day and will be providing hot food in the Minor Hall.

Crimson Ball

In the evening, there will be a Crimson Ball in the Memorial Hall, hosted by Society Social Club, with entertainment by local band “Indigo”. Doors open at 8pm however numbers in the top hall will be restricted so come early to avoid disappointment, there will be no admittance to non-members of the Social Club after 10pm.
