On Saturday 3rd December, 2011 the Associated Clubs of the Apprrentice Boys of Derry will gather in Londonderry to commemorate the 323rd anniversary of the Shutting of the Gates, the defiant act by the “Brave Thirteen” which led to the Siege of Derry.
The parade will follow the traditional format, with the times the same as last year.
Visiting Brethren will parade from the Waterside at 11.30am. At 1.15pm the General Committee will lead the parade from the Memorial Hall, around the city centre and into St Columb's Cathedral where a service of thanksgiving will be held. At 3.00pm the parade will go back around the town and gather in Bishop Street for the burniing of the effigy of Lundy.
Following on from the hugely successfull webcasts from the Maiden City Festival in August this year we will be bringing the Shutting of the Gates celebrations to a worldwide audience.
The webcast will include the three parades of the day and the burning of “Lundy the Traitor” bringing the day's events to a close.
As the nation comes together to remember all those who have given up their lives in defence of our liberty the Apprentice Boys gathered at the War Memorial at Belfast City Hall.
As an organisation based firmly in remembrance of the actions of a brave few in 1688-89 it is only natural that we also remember the acts of the brave men and women who continue to pay the ultimate price in defence of our liberty in two World Wars and in recent conflicts.
The whole of the Remembrance Service is available on YouTube to watch again: www.youtube.com/v/iSxha6RcIk4.
